Our unique inoculation technique combines natural enzymes with organic chemicals and biological processes. The first step involves drilling and inserting enzymes into strategically placed holes, with temporary plugs placed into the holes for 48 hours. These enzymes mimic the work normally done by fungi & bacteria, breaking down the tree’s structural barriers (cellulose and pectin), enabling microbes to penetrate the wood, while the resulting tissue stress triggers the tree to produce high quality resinous oud.

Our enzyme technology is cutting edge and mimics the biological action of more commonly used inoculants without the unpredictability of those live compounds.

Carefully selected organic acids are injected into the tree at very low concentrations to kick start the healing process. These natural organic compounds, which are present in all plant life, are designed to simulate an attack and alert the tree to “defend itself”. Naturally occurring organic acids typically promotes a higher concentration of 2-(2-phenylethyl)-chromones (PECs), which give oud oil its distinct, deep aroma.

When required, the final step is the introduction of biological substrates, mainly the fungus and bacteria that naturally occurs in the soil of the rainforest where Agarwood grows naturally. By artificially introducing these microbes, commercial plantations can bypass the rare, decades-long natural infection process, yielding harvestable Grade-A resin in as little as 18 to 24 months. Microbially-induced agarwood closely matches wild agarwood in chemical complexity, often accumulating equivalent or higher levels of the quality-marker compounds responsible for premium market value, particularly sesquiterpenes.
